Overview

Get Lit serves over 10,000 teens annually through its variety of in school, after school, Get Lit Player and Magic Poetry Bus programs. Get Lit was founded by Diane Luby Lane in 2005. It was inspired by Lane's participation in a NYC guerilla poetry troupe, which was created and led by acting legend, Viveca Lindfors. With Lindfors, Lane memorized large amounts of classic poetry that their troupe, 'An Actor Works', performed all over NYC. This experience is the seed that started the Get Lit program. It has been broadened by Lane's experience as a monologue writer and later work with spoken-word poetry through Youth Speaks Founder, James Kass.

Since then, Get Lit has had the great fortune of merging with California Poet Laureate, Carol Muske-Dukes who has incorporated her own teaching strategies and poetic techniques into the Get Lit curriculum creating an even more evolved learning strategy. Together they have created, ‘Ignite-Proactive Poetry' which is a fresh, engaging, and relevant way of teaching poetry, that makes it relatable for all. In addition, Carol Muske-Dukes has brought her interactive ‘Magic Poetry Bus' program to Get Lit so poetry can be experienced “on-line” in rare video clips.

At Get Lit - a classic isn't a classic because it's old, a classic is a classic because it's great. Get Lit is creating a resurgence in the written word by making is accessible for all.
