Get Lit’s ‘If I Awaken in Los Angeles’ Is a “Love Letter” to the City
Deadline’s Katie Campione previews Get Lit’s If I Awaken in Los Angeles, an immersive multimedia performance at The Ford blending spoken word, live music, dance, and video to celebrate the cultures and communities that make up Los Angeles.

The production takes audiences on a journey through neighborhoods including South Central, Boyle Heights, Chinatown, and Koreatown, honoring the city’s Indigenous roots and diverse cultural history.
Director Gina Belafonte explains that while the show brings these communities to life through imagery, music, and performance, “it’s really all rooted in the words.”
Featuring musical direction by Derrick Hodge and guest artists including Dante Basco, Sekou Andrews, Luis Rodriguez, Jason Chu, and more, the performance celebrates Get Lit’s Los Angeles roots and the power of poetry to bring communities together.
