Palmdale Student Wins Get Lit’s “If I Awaken in Los Angeles” Poetry Contest
Yesenia’s poem, “Lake Los Angeles,” was selected as one of 11 winning poems in Get Lit’s If I Awaken in Los Angeles poetry contest. More than 350 students submitted work, with winners selected by a panel of poets, artists, and cultural leaders.
Her poem responds to Get Lit’s If I Awaken in Los Angeles project, which explores the people and communities that shape Los Angeles through poetry, music, and storytelling. Yesenia drew inspiration from her own experience adjusting to life in the Antelope Valley after moving from the San Fernando Valley.
As one of the contest winners, Yesenia received publication, a certificate, and a $1,000 cash prize. Get Lit’s Brian Sonia Wallace visited her school to surprise her with the news alongside her parents, principal, and creative writing teacher José Rios.
